While President Trump has called for tariffs to help the U.S. film business, others are pushing for a federal tax incentive that they say could boost domestic production.

In January, Trump asked conservative actors Jon Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone to be his “special ambassadors” to Hollywood. Last week, Voight met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago and presented his plan to bolster the U.S. film industry, which he’d developed in consultation with unions, studios and streamers.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom reached out to the Trump administration on Monday with hopes that the two can pair up and create a $7.5 billion federal film tax credit to help out the movie business.
