NEW YORK (AP) — A squirrel ran onto the field during Friday night’s game between the Yankees and the Red Sox and caused a brief delay.

The squirrel emerged near the Red Sox dugout on the third-base line, running into Boston’s rookie outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia before making his way to the mound. Fried then stood and watched the squirrel make himself at home, standing for a few moments on the dirt before scampering off toward first base.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will renew their rivalry on Thursday, opening a four-game series at Yankee Stadium that has obvious playoff implications. The Yankees enter Thursday with a 1 ½ game lead over the Red Sox for the American League's top wild card spot.

The Red Sox did outhit the Yankees, 10-8, but they were brutal with runners in scoring position early in the game before scoring five of their six runs in the final five innings (including two in the ninth on a Roman Anthony home run).

Red Sox prospect Jhostynxon Garcia – who is fittingly nicknamed "The Password" – has been called up to the big leagues. Boston called up the outfielder from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday ahead of a crucial four-game series against the New York Yankees.
