Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed what his original plan was for Gi-hun's ending and why he ultimately made the change.

“If Gi-hun doesn’t go through with it — which is what happens — the Front Man will feel a sense of defeat. He would also feel a form of self-reproach, or even envy,” Lee continued. “ But the deepest part of him wanted to see Gi-hun not give in and continue to hold onto hope for the world and for humanity .” In short: he wanted Gi-hun to win.

When asked what those conversations looked like, Lee emphasized that “Squid Game” was originally intended to be a one season show. The series’ creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk only returned to make Seasons 2 and 3 because of the resounding popularity of the first installment.
