A mosquito-borne virus more common in South America has been detected in the United States. Health officials say the chikungunya virus has been identified in a patient living in the suburbs of New York City who began experiencing symptoms in August.
Mosquitoes have arrived in Iceland, a place once free of them. This marks a significant ecological change. Warmer weather and global travel are allowing these insects to spread into new, untouched regions.
Fulton County health officials are warning residents after some mosquitoes tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis.
“We are actually going to be using drones to apply larvicide to swamps flooded woodlots and also other hard to reach places,” said Sarasota County’s mosquito control manager, Wade Brennan. ”This is a very safe and well preforming precision targeting equipment that allows us to treat only the water in those areas.”

Monterey Park and West Puente Valley mosquito control work starting next week
Treatments will be done Monday, Oct. 13, and Tuesday, Oct. 14, between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. Treatment in West Puente Valley will take place in the area between West Fairgrove Avenue and West Francisquito Avenue, north of North Hacienda Boulevard and south of North Sunset Avenue.
Mosquito control teams are racing to eliminate standing water, while public-health experts try to answer a worrying question.
Clark County Council seeks volunteers for two seats on the Mosquito Control District Board of Trustees, with terms starting January 2026. Applications are due by October 31.
