HONG KONG — China is sending Vice President Han Zheng to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in Washington, Chinese state media reported Friday, the first time a senior Chinese leader will have attended a new U.S. president’s swearing-in.

U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping held a phone call on Monday, state media in Beijing said, following their October meeting in South Korea.

President Donald Trump says he will visit Beijing in April and host China’s President Xi Jinping for a state visit later next year.

In an unusual move, Xi Jinping, the leader of China, called President Trump. The two spoke about trade, Taiwan and Ukraine, according to separate official statements.

President Donald Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea on Thursday for tariff negotiations the U.S. president later rated a “12” on a scale of 1 to 10.
