In an effort to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, the US president proposes tariffs targeting Putin’s major trading partners.
Later on Tuesday, Trump suggested that the U.S. could in fact boost trade with India, writing in an evening social media post that the U.S. and India are working to address trade barriers between the nations. He added that he was looking forward to speaking with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
China and India are major buyers of Russian oil, which helps to keep the country's economy and war machine afloat. Last month, the US imposed a 50% tariff on goods from India, which included a 25% penalty for its transactions with Russia.
Trump also urged NATO countries to impose “50% to 100% TARIFFS ON CHINA,” which he said should be withdrawn after the Russia-Ukraine war has concluded.
