Auburn has decided to recognize seven more of its football teams as national champions.

Auburn is claiming four additional football national titles and will call itself a nine-time champion moving forward.

“For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program’s storied history – choosing to recognize only Associated Press National Championships.

The school announced that it would be retiring Newton’s No. 2 number after he led the football program to a national title in 2010 and won the Heisman Trophy. He is one of the best players in Auburn history and is only the fourth Auburn player to ever have his number retired, joining Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan, and Terry Beasley.

The Hoosiers were strong on offense and defense last season. Two returnees were recognized among the best in college football prior to the 2025 season.

Tyson, who had 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns before being injured late last season, is among three wide receivers on the Associated Press Preseason All-America first team.
