The first group of immigrants has arrived at a new detention center deep in the Florida Everglades that officials have dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” a spokesperson for Republican state Attorney General James Uthmeier told The Associated Press.

On Wednesday night, workers replaced the signs in front of the training facility with ones that read "Alligator Alcatraz."

A newly constructed detention center, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz," has opened in the Florida Everglades amid political backlash and human rights concerns. The facility, built to house thousands, has already received its first batch of immigrants arrested under the 287(g) program.
