Hurricane Erin continues to churn in the Atlantic waters hundreds of miles off the U.S., prompting officials to close beaches along the East Coast from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast.

RODANTHE, N.C. (AP) — From Florida to New England, people trying to enjoy the last hurrahs of summer along the coast were met with rip current warnings, closed beaches and in some cases already treacherous waves as Hurricane Erin inched closer Wednesday.

The storm is expected to bring dangerous conditions to parts of the coast on Wednesday but then turn away from the United States.

Hurricane Erin won't make landfall, but Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches will be affected by its presence offshore.

Local beachgoers are being warned of dangerous rip currents and high surf along the Massachusetts coast due to the powerful Hurricane Erin far out at sea. The National Weather Service’s Boston office has issued a forecast warning of rip currents that can pull swimmers away from the shore and into deep water.

Rough surf and strong winds from Hurricane Erin​ are battering beaches, and the storm is expected to cause major erosion.

Hurricane Erin is bringing dangerous surf and rip currents to Massachusetts, prompting beach closures on the Islands and along the South Coast. Nantucket announced Tuesday that all South Shore beaches would be closed due to large surf and dangerous rip currents from approaching Hurricane Erin.
