India’s defense minister says a stampede has killed an unspecified number of people at a major railway station in New Delhi.

Crowds had swelled because trains carrying Hindu pilgrims to the Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious festival, had been delayed, according to local media.

The Delhi high Court noted that this public interest petition raised concerns about the ineffective implementation of provisions in the Railways Act, primarily Sections 57 and 147.
