The papal conclave—the election of the next Pope—is set to begin on May 7, and will see 133 cardinals gather to vote.

The recent death of Pope Francis means that for the first time since 2013, a new leader of the Catholic Church will soon be elected. A papal conclave, consisting of 133 eligible cardinals, will meet in the Vatican from May 7 to decide who should become the next pontiff.

There are currently 135 cardinals who are under age 80 and eligible to vote in the conclave, hailing from 71 different countries in the most geographically diverse conclave in history. Already two have formally told the Holy See that they cannot attend for health reasons, bringing the number of men who will enter the Sistine Chapel down to 133.
