The Western Maryland was a small but mighty railroad that hauled coal and freight in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania before merging with the B&O and C&O to eventually become part of CSX as we know it today. Numbered CSX 1869 in honor of the year the C&O was formed, CSX’s newest heritage locomotive commemorates the proud history of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway! The C&O Railway was a major line among North American freight and passenger railroads for nearly a century before becoming part of the Chessie System in 1972. Each of our new heritage locomotives is reinforcing the #ONECSX team’s pride in the history of CSX as we continue to move the nation’s economy with safe, reliable and sustainable rai
