It's no secret that I am anti shock collar/prong/aversive. It's also no secret that I recently had surgery. What do those things have in common? Glad you asked You see I have pig, Diane, that I've been working with on the cue "open" at which point she opens her mouth and I drop in food. I have Ditty that I've been working with on "touch" where she touches my hand, like a boop. She also gets walked on a long line for new grazing. Well that was the plan anyway. She's fine on the line, she is also

4 days ago this little one was surrendered back into my care. You know her as North, from the Elbows Up litter. She got pretty wound up, found herself in fight or flight and fight was winning. She was getting riled multiple times a day, then renovations got added to the mix. She was a pup that was absolutely on a road to biting. She's had a few days off from interruptions, words, touch and has settled enough that she's been moved inside The goal is always to move them forward. Now we wait for pu

So very often I find that breakthrough moments come after a horrible moment. Fluffs broke out of his crate yesterday he wrecked an awful lot of things around the home he emptied most of the plant pots he pulled up some flooring he peed he pooped he ate part of my drywall he was an overall disaster when I got home, nothing that can't be repaired. Today he came in on his own after a potty break instead of me having to go out and pick up the end of his leash and guide him in and tonight he's snuggl

Ouisey!!! Has been fussing for a couple of days now It came, it went, and it came back. The first day she vomited, my brain rushed to blockage and feeling uncomfortable. A friend who dealt with that agreed I was super worried and decided to take her for a walk so I could observe (or encourage a bowel movement) Well, nope, that wasn't it hahah (All is well, it's early, but it seems that I finally found a food that her iron stomach doesn't tolerate) changed food, problem seems to be solved. | Oops

From 3 day old bottle babies, these pups have done the things. They've walked on the surfaces, played with the weird toys, won some hearts, mended others. They met the people and took the trips. My very first adoptive family, over 30 years ago told me "you gave her wings, we will teach her to fly" Wanted : families that will teach these baby dragons to fly | Oops! Puppies

Labra-kadabra managed, scared, to eat, in a new space. Ot was a little harder for her. The tailbto the keft indicates she's frightened. The speed when i get close...anxiety. give her space and anxiety reduces. She gulped her breakfast lab-style! What happens when we exceed a goal? We make a new one. Today was geography. Tomorrow, it will be a different dish. Note the canned food reward at the end... Scary thing, then treat! So proud of this girly. | Oops! Puppies

Morning!!! I took this video for my personal page, but then realized it has information for you all as well. First, for those who knew I jad 2 kunes (Jack and Dianne), Jack passed before Christmas. Enter Little Ditty to act as a companion for Dianne. They don't do "alone" well. This is the first Morning of her being here. The first tine Squish (and Sprout) have met her. You'll notice Squish is very interested and even begins to bark. What do I do? Zip my lips We don't talk to crazy. BUT the seco

My heart loves this so much. That she chose to tell him she too was safe is a heart exploding moment "Dogs will also roll onto their backs as an invitation to play, particularly when they are interacting with smaller dogs or puppies. It's a friendly posture that invites the other dog to jump in and roughhouse—a type of self-handicapping. | Oops! Puppies

One last post this morning! Pretty sure I've spammed your feed at this point This is my boy Squish. He has slept with me, in this room his entire life. He runs ahead of me, and on late nights, goes without me. This is displacement behavior. This is a coping tool for him. What is he trying to cope with? Im about to get into bed and the leg needs to be tightened... and it squeaks He loses all faith that its a safe situation. Its been about a week, I forget until bedtime.. and we repeat. Once I'm i

Our vet got called away for an emergency. She will be back when she gets back. In the meantime Remi has gotten a bit extra amped. There's people walking in the hall, dogs barking, smells, emotions... He started to bark at those things. So... It's a training moment. When he's calm as a person walks by the closed door, he gets a treat. When his ears acknowledge a noise but he doesn't bark, treat. When he stops barking.. a treat rewards the silence Reinforcing what you want to have repeated is the

Oscar and Meyer (both female) have only been around their Momma, who can be challenging (she is here as well) So yesterday, I took Squish out to see their reaction. They were super interested, and I will likely do a play date in the big yard soon. They and momma came with coccidia, meds are complete, and I just want to give them a couple of days to stop shedding the parasite. Family has been asked to vacate, surrendering the dogs allowed a 60-day extension. Momma is here, with the option to retu

Sprout decided today that the broom was sketchy. If I tried to verbally convince her it was fine, she would be getting reinforced for barking Ignoring/ we don't talk to crazy is half of it Purposely reinforcing the behavior I want (when she disengages) is the whole ticket! We can't teach "no" it leaves the pups in a state of frustration We can reinfored/reward what we want to see. Dog chasing the cat? Did you talk to them when they were moving toward the cat? Dog dashing out the door did you try

A couple things about this video... Squish is handicapping himself to make himself less threatening. The second is Marshmallow doing "play adjacent" She has had a couple minor tug sessions but isn't ready for rough housing Sprout knows Squish is safe and has no issue pouncing on him for the take down | Oops! Made this video this morning. I'm more convinced daily that the root of his issues is confidence. See his easy, happy body language chasing kibble? That's a great improvement. See how he won't walk around the kennel door? That's lack of confidence. He's unused to making decisions on his own and I set the bar too high When I lower the criteria, he is immediately able to navigate the door. So, yes, a starting point. Over the next few days I'll slowly shrink the gap and hopefully he will try and no

Let's talk about aggression Burger has bitten with intent. His last bite removed a dime sized chunk from a lady's hand. Can we take out our egos, set aside any foolish belief in dominance theory, and agree that he's not happy. At this point, we can also agree he's showing aggression. By definition: hostile or violent behavior or attitudes toward another; readiness to attack or confront. It doesn't come from nowhere. He's telling me he's upset. I have no right to argue with him (or desire). I wou

This was the 3rd and final interaction (she said no-thank you to touch on her head twice) This 3rd test, I stepped on her leash. Two things came up. First, this was not comfortable for her. The pacing and fast tail (90% of tail wagging is NOT friendly dog) She did seem more interested in touch away from her head. Even leaned in a bit. My girl Ouisey only allows head pats... pat her body, and she elevates fast... ignore too long, her anxiety rises, and I lose a shoe. So, today is a reset day. Dog

Gus'parents are due to get off a plane in about an hour, so I wanted to get this last session in before he goes home. First, we are back to no competition and building on him just eating treats. I add some known commands like "sit" and "go to bed" as reinforcers The treats he didnt eat, get tossed into his crate so he can desensitize and try later. When he play bows (offers behaviors) that's when I know I've got him! After thats he starts to climb in me, a sign of greater enthusiasm Last is end
