When it comes to migration, there are long-haul fliers like the common tern (up to 5,000 miles) and short-distance strollers like tiger salamanders who strut their way about a half-mile from winter hibernation sites to spring breeding grounds. Last summer, a very special common tern was captured for the 9th time in its life at 29 years old. We recently received confirmation from the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory that he’s tied for the U.S. longevity record with a common tern from Massachusetts.
