All the cloths I weave have different characters and foibles and I love the variety that brings to each order that I make. In this case, it’s all about numbers and sequences and after two weeks of counting my way through the weft pattern I can practically recite it in my sleep. Like counting your breaths in meditation, it’s a great tool for focussing your concentration and I find the time and metres pass a lot quicker! A lovely gentle story of sustainable fashion design from award winning designer @kwee.va with whom I was fortunate to work with to create cloth that I am very proud of. Posted @withregram • @kwee.va Ahead of today’s @sallingdk ‘Future Friendly’ awards today here’s a short clip of me speaking about my work ✨ thank you @botitokbanszuperhos, @woveninthebone @donegalyarns and @brascovintagewholesale | Woven In The Bone

It’s not for everyone this weaving lark. I suspect it appeals to those of us that have rather compulsive approach to wanting to make a success of making cloth, in processes, that others might find rather ridiculous. But now you know how it’s made… does it not make it all the more interesting? And what an amazing value that adds to the jacket you will wear to keep you warm. #morethanjustcloth #artisancloth | Woven In The Bone

Preparation for warping. I have a very basic creel system for warping but with care and attention and understanding of the materials and process, it works for my small and very personal scale of production. There are no sensors for broken ends… I’m more likely to hear the break from the change in jingling sound of the tubes rattling in the creel. I love that. There were no broken ends in the warping of this cloth. Making #artisancloth using human senses and simple technology. This is an exclusiv

After much planning, and preparatory processes here I am on one of the @skyeweavers looms weaving throws! Sharing the processes was clearly a massive part of the JOY of this whole collaboration with my friends Andrea & Roger, who have built an incredible business on Skye. But from a completely selfish perspective as a life-long obsessed weaver, a very special part of the experience was to sit on | Woven In The Bone

Beaming off means transferring all the smaller warp sections from the mill off onto the beam. At this point there is a hint or a sense of the cloth to come, but it’s still only half the story. The looms sounds and feels very different today. Normally I weave any solid weft (ie areas of only one weft colour) with two shuttles as this is generally considered good practice. The mechanism that controls the revolving box that contains the shuttles has been my nemesis throughout the nine years Ive had this loom. I seem to have to adjust the mechanism at some point nearly every year and while it’s always a challenge I seem to get there in the end! But, this week I’ve really struggled to get

My sister Belinda and I feel very fortunate to be in a position where we are able to make beautiful textiles that can be worn, loved and appreciated for the whole of their naturally useful life… from when the wool grew on the back of the animal, keeping the sheep warm and protected, to its final role in keeping you warm and protected. It feels like an honour to contribute skills and the basics of our time and human energy to contribute to the chain of production that has enabled the making of th

Renewing acquaintance with an old friend, a cloth called LARCH, I made back in 2016 in the very early days of the business. It’s going back in production as I have an order for one of @andersonandsheppard bespoke clients, and I’m delighted to be making it again :-) | Woven In The Bone

Back to late last year when weaving this tweed, so full of character that was designed especially for John Alexander Skelton as part of his AW20 Collection. That collection has since been launched (more on that later) and I’m delighted that we’ll soon see this cloth back in production! | Woven In The Bone

All three of my looms have very different characters. In how they feel and how they sound. I’m still getting to know this one and I have a lot to learn yet to have it fine tuned and running as it should…. it doesn’t sound right at all… unbalanced and clunky… even though the scarves turned out beautifully! I am so much more confident than I was 13 years ago with my first Hattersley, but I’m pretty much self-taught and still move at my own rather cautious pace! But with the first order on this loo

While the revolving box from one loom is away with Norman getting fixed (fingers crossed) it’s time to introduce you to the next new order going into the Mk2 loom… Herdwick wool. A hardy hill sheep that thrives on the high moors and fells. Life on the fells is not for the faint hearted. But the wool of these remarkably resilient animals is strong, durable and bursting with character. #artisancloth for @theironsnail | Woven In The Bone

While @caoimhedowlingstudio is showing her collection in Paris this week at @poet_concept it seems timely to take a step back to May last year when I was weaving cloth for her. This is our second collaboration with @donegalyarns. It can’t be understated the amount of passion, creativity, time, energy, emotion and sheer determination that is involved to bring a collection to life as a young emerging designer. Have a truly wonderful week Caoimhe - you deserve all the success coming your way! x | W
