Did you know Eastern (Red-Spotted) Newts can live for 12-15 years? These little salamanders only grow to be 3-5 inches as adults, and are just 1-3 inches as juveniles, otherwise known as Red Efts. Larvae live in water and use external gills to breathe, but transform into juvenile efts, which migrate to terrestrial habitats and develop lungs to breathe the air. The red eft is one of our most recognized salamanders, and may spend several years on land before returning to breeding ponds where they

While hiking during a visit to West Virginia we came upon this cute red eft, which is a juvenile stage of the red-spotted newt (a type of Eastern newt). These little newts are quite remarkable. They have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years in the wild, give off a toxin that makes them unappealing to predators and go through three totally different life stages: They're born in and live for several months in the water during their larval stage, when they're olive or yellow-brown and have gills and a flat

🌊🦎 Although eastern newts are aquatic as larvae and adults, juveniles (called red efts) live on land! Around 2 to 5 months of age, their lungs, legs and eyelids make them more suited to life on land. As they search for water, they make their homes in leaf litter along the way. . . . #AmphibianWeek | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

The eastern newt or 'red eft' (Notophthalmus viridescens) can live up to 15 years in the wild! It is common in eastern North America inhabiting small lakes, ponds, streams and nearby wet forests. These land-dwelling efts move slowly on land but are active on rainy nights. Video of a Red eft slowly climbing on moss in Canaan Valley, recorded by USFWS. Newts are neat. 🦎 You might see these little guys and gals out and about as red-spotted newts emerge from venal pools into the red-eft phase of their lives. This is a terrestrial phase where they have this bright orange coloration — a warning for predators that their skin is toxic! They roam around usually in mixed deciduous/evergreen forest floors looking for small invertebrates to feed on. They can stay in this terrestrial form for a year or two before they transform to a more olive-looking a

(Disclaimer: please don’t hold red efts’ hands or any other parts, it is dangerous for them and for you!) 🦎 There are a lot of special critters of the forest in the summertime here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but this is always a really special one to spot (no pun intended). I was lucky enough to run into three of these on a morning stroll this week. The eastern red spotted newt is an amphibian with a three-part lifecycle: they start in the water for a few months after hatching, then spend the
